We are often amazed when someone said, ''I am English-educated.'' Our ears stand immediately after the 'fascinating' sentence being popped out. In contrast, we are often giving a O-I-C face when someone said,''I am Chinese(Mandarin)-educated.'' What is wrong with us? Are we looking down on our own language? Perhaps it is not the problem. The main cause is we tend to admire those who are raised up in an English-educated family. Who knows the so-called English-educated people might also admire the Chinese-educated family?

I am always shocked by a Chinese who cannot speak Mandarin or even dialects. This is an uncommon situation in Malaysia and Singapore. We may wonder why on Earth the English-educated Chinese cannot take the initiative to learn Chinese(Mandarin). Chinese language has been globalized and widely used not only in communicating and also business.

English only? *Terrified*
In my opinion, we must master our own language before learning other languages. You might not agree with me but I am standing on my stand.

english educated blood traitor here :)
it's not necessary the fault of the english-eds that they are unable to speak or write their ancestral language or dialects - their education from the beginning was decided by their parents and in my generation at least, it is very difficult to go far without a thorough grounding in the rigours of the queen's tongue.
and it's also the attitude of a lot of chinese educated people as well: my ex-girlfriend, who was from a chinese school, said that she would not date chinese-educated guys because they appear uncouth, ungentlemanly and flat-out unsophisticated (not that that's necessarily the case). this is a sentiment held by a lot of my chinese ed friends as well.
but just to clarify, i do and can speak mandarin and cantonese fluently... i just can't write them :)
im an english-educated chinese.. banana? =P
kok s3n w4i, I agree with you that English-educated men are much more gentlemen than the Chinese-educated men. :-) At least, you can speak Chinese fluently.:-)
